Drawing on photographic archives, Hoza uses a ballpoint pen to sketch house facades and gardens on her ancestors’ bedsheets. By compiling lists and inventories, Milena tries to preserve objects and details from the places she has visited.

An Autobiography of Places

Hoza Savarino and Milena Lanzmann present a joint exhibition that blends their two artistic practices: drawing and writing. Together, they bring places from the past to life and evoke their memories. By delving into memories of an apartment, a garden, a bedroom, a balcony, the home of someone who has always welcomed us warmly, or a brand-new home, they aim to reawaken the details that make up these spaces and render them familiar, reassuring, or even intimate. They invite us to recall these objects, these plants or flowers, these trinkets hung, tucked away, or planted there, in these places whose memories bring comfort.

Through the act of writing lists and inventories, Milena attempts to preserve the objects and details of the places she has lived in.

When personal archives are lacking, we find ways to bring vanished places back to life through the internet or the memories of those who remain.

Their two sensibilities engage in dialogue and coexist to create new interpretations of the remnants of childhood by drawing on memories, scenes from daily life, and wishes for comfort.

Our speakers

Hoza Savarino

Hoza Savarino, a fifth-year student at the Valence School of Fine Arts and communications coordinator for the sixth edition of Poetik Bazar, develops her artistic practice by exploring the permeability and connections between fiction and biography, as well as the relationship between memory and care. A collector of stories of all kinds, she is interested in how the mediums she creates can accompany and convey these stories to the audience. Using copperplate engraving, writing, oil painting, and film photography as her preferred techniques, her works invite dialogue to encourage audiences to perceive and develop ways to care for memories, places, objects, moments, or relationships. This fascinating and meticulous work interlocks with itself like a puzzle, aiming to highlight acts of care, the preservation of stories, and their perception in our contemporary environment.

Milena Lanzmann

Milena Lanzmann, author and multi-disciplinary artist, whose work questions the passage of time, the archiving of the everyday, and the crossroads between text and image. In this way, she has been able to pass on her sensitivity to poetry, with a view to breaking down barriers and encouraging reading and writing through artistic expression. Through her approach, writing has become both a poetic gesture and a gesture of collection and transformation.
