How can gender(s) be translated? How do gender(s) stand up to the test of translation? How can we conceive of a French translation that takes into account the differences in gender articulation between English and French, so as not to render identities invisible?

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Starting with “classic” translation exercises from English to French, using poetic texts taken from contemporary US feminist and queer corpora, the workshop will gradually shift towards a more methodological questioning of the role of gender in our very thinking about translation. It will then be an opportunity to reflect together on our gender biases in our actions, habits, and translation practices, and to collectively invent new creative, dissident, and divergent ways of translating.

ABOUT THE LIMITED EDITION COLLECTIVE

The Connexion Limitée collective was born in 2019 out of a desire among French and American artists to bring poets who, for economic or political reasons, seem to us to be less visible in the publishing world, across the Atlantic through translation. We also take care to work in agreement and dialogue with the authors we have chosen to translate. The collective dimension of our translations is at the heart of our project. Together, we have translated the work of Adrienne Rich, Laura Vazquez, Eleni Sikelianos, Kay Gabriel, Mónica de la Torre, Cole Swensen, Chen Chen, and Sawako Nakayasu.

Our speakers

Shira Abramovich

Shira Abramovich grew up between the United States and Israel, and now lives in Montreal. She writes and translates poetry while pursuing a PhD at McGill University, where she studies the intersection of languages, written forms, and computer science. Her poems in English have been published in literary journals such as Crashtest, Polyphony HS, and The Adroit Journal. Her poetic work has also received the Claudia Ann Seaman Award and the Edwin M. Honig Memorial Prize.

Lénaïg Cariou

Lénaïg Cariou is an artist-researcher, translator, and poet. She has lived in France, the United States, and Germany. Alongside a PhD in contemporary poetry at Université Paris 8, she co-directs the new “Poésie Commune” collection at MF publishing house. Her first two poetry books, À main levée (LansKine) and La poésie n’est pas une bonne fille (Art&Go, with Maxime Hortense Pascal and Liliane Giraudon), were published in 2024. She is associate author at the Kunsthalle in Mulhouse in 2025. Her work unfolds at the intersection of poetry and visual arts.
