A writing workshop on the cut-up technique: bring scissors and attack old books, cutting out words or pieces to be assembled later to create new poetic images.

The material for writing a poem is the same as for writing an essay, telling a story, or confessing your feelings to someone: words. In our minds, words often come in clusters, in ready-made phrases; it's as if they stick together on their own. But a poem is precisely a place where words can be assembled differently, where one can play with what is logical, expected, or obvious.

Roxane Desjardins, head of Les Herbes Rouges publishing house, is a Quebec writer and editor. At Poetik Bazar, she will lead the COUPER-COLLER workshop, exploring the transition between everyday language and the invention of a poem.

This workshop invites participants to bring scissors and tackle existing texts: old books, various texts. They will cut out pieces that will then be assembled on a blank page. This playful workshop is an opportunity to experiment with free association, to practice oblique reading methods (to find words on a page, linear reading is not necessarily the best method), and to discover the inner workings of poetic image construction.
